This year's anniversary 25th International scientific & expert meeting of gas experts in Opatija began its work in festive atmosphere. The founders of the Opatija meeting, participants who have been attending our meetings regularly, as well as those who came to Opatija for the first time, were all present on this meeting.
In addition to Croatian gas experts, many experts from Slovenia, Austria, Hungary, Serbia, Bosnia, Macedonia, Germany, France, Belgium, Italy, Turkey and China arrived to this Conference & Exhibition.

KORMAT, the Croatian national conference for material corrosion protection and industrial finishing was organized as a part of Zagreb International Fair. Counsel gathered arround 80 croatian and regional experts in a field of industrial and construction material and hence, appropriate corrosion protection.
Our engineers presented a professional paper titled as "EVALUATION OF A.C. CORROSION LIKELIHOOD OF BURIED PIPELINES" (authors: K. Kekez, M. Mrzlečki), whereupon ensued a commercial company promotion.

Embedded steel pipelines in vicinity of facilities, railway feeders, or those parallel leaded with AC power lines are often subject to AC or DC interference. Stray current or current induced by electromagnetic field travels and leave the pipe trough the surface of coating fault. Large amounts of current discharged on relatively small surface cause extreme high anodic current densities and consequently corrosion.
Aim of this workshop is to present AC/DC interference origins and so far the best engineering practice for mitigation.

EUROCORR is the major event in Europe in the field of corrosion science and engineering. This year we attend EUROCORR 2009 which took place in Nice. It was a forum for presentation and discussion of recent developments in all areas of corrosion and corrosion protection, with emphasis on Corrosion from the Nanoscale to the Plant .
We also attend a meeting of Working party 16 (cathodic protection) which was held during the conference.

TELEMETRIC SUPERVISION AND CONTROL OF CATHODIC PROTECTION SYSTEM VIA VPN/GPRS AND OPTIC TELECOMMUNICATION SYSTEM (Author: Dražen Pažameta, BEE)
Besides others, high demands were requested for Cathodic Protection System in a phase of design of transport gasline network in Republic of Croatia. This article describes telemetric supervision and control system which uses wireless GPRS network and optic communication system based on Ethernet network and TCP/IP protocol. System described above is able to monitor and control cathodic protection system for both; stations nearby optic communication network as well as for widely separated, connecting it wirelessly.
Process in Cathodic Protection station is controlled via PLC which is connected into communication network, with SCADA system as main supervisor and controller.

STEEL GASLINE PROTECTION FROM INDUCED VOLTAGES (→ Autor: Stjepan Pavliša, BEE):
By appliance of new insulating coatings for embedded steel gaselines the passive corrosion protection is now significantly increased. Regarding to this fact, cathodic protection parameters are changed. In other words, cathodic protection current demand is decreased considerably which increases requirements for pipeline protection from surrounding electric power systems. Number of such a electric system is expanding, lowering the distance between them and a gasline. Lower distance increases induced voltage and stray current.
All this phenomena complicates measuring methods in cathodic protection and calls for appliance of new measuring techniques for overvoltage and induced voltage protection.

The aim of XI YUCORR was to present and discuss of the results directly linked to theoretical and engineering aspects of corrosion and different types of materials by the researchers from whole Balkan Peninsula and the other countries in the fields of industry, thermal power plants, civil engineering and industry finishing, as well as themes considering environmental protection. The authors from the universities, research centers and industry present their recent papers. The scientific and technical program will, through the plenary work, maintain the character of the previous conferences. Neither this time PA-EL didn’t miss the chance to support such event with its attendance as well as with submitted paper: “Cathodic protection of steel in concrete – conductive coatings as anode material”.

Two days of ecologic and environmental conference in Opatija manage to gather a larger number of activist and expert with the common factor: ecology. Prevention-Intervention-Rehabilitation could be the active brand of this meeting. But, disproportion between attention given to incident prevention and intervention measures undertaken after disaster is illogic. The old adage would say: Better safe than sorry! Isn’t it more acceptable to have a valid cathodic protection system on pipes and tanks full of oil and gas, rather than recovering and expurgating whole surrounding environment? Inspection supervision of cathodic protection system in term of prevention is unlikely, that’s why we consider that inspection service should give more attention for preventive actions and more often check not just whether pipeline owner does have cathodic protection, but does this system is valid and safe. In that case there won’t be necessary that often talk about intervention after ecologic disaster. Just about prevention.

Last week an expert workshop under title “Cathodic protection” was held in lecture room of Electrotechical Society Zagreb, as a part of integral EDZ annual programme aimed as a support for design and building engineers and managers in our region.
There were 24 participants at this seminar, mostly from design, building and maintenance affairs from Croatia, Italy, BiH and Serbia.
As usual, President of Society Mr. Josip Mozer gave us an introduction, and then the whole workshop was held by Mr. Stjepan Pavliša, Mr. Krešimir Kekez and Dr. Simone Tremolada.
During the programme all participants had a chance to watch experimental workshop with cathodic protection simulation in lab environment. There was also presented a stray current influence on unprotected steel and copper pipelines. For more pictures please click on gallery.

Gasline corrosion protection by applying cathodic protection remains still as only solution but also and a huge challenge. Portable Reference Electrode PRE-Zn is a constituent element of Cathodic Protection System for offshore structures. There are several possible applications for this electrode; open circuit measurement, CP potential check, stationary reference electrode check, temporary CP in dockyards and in corrosion diagnostics - corrosion potential and potential influenced by stray current.

Having an implemented CP system, but not knowing the potential value is comparable with playing a billiard or darts blindfold.
